Not only is the tongue a small thing, words are also small – so small you cannot even see them. However, they can have a huge impact. Next week we will learn of the destructive power of the tongue. This week we got to learn of the raw power of the tongue. While James did not make much of it, we should understand that words, though they have awesome destructive power, also have awesome constructive power. The gospel is communicated through words, often in spoken word by use of the tongue. We, too, can stir one another up to love and good works by using our words well. The writer of Proverbs sought to build his son into a godly man through his use of words (“Hear, my son…”). Words are seldom neutral. Either you are edifying or destroying. This week do not ignorantly think of your words as being neutral. Think about the powerful resource you have been given by God and seek to build up others with every word you speak.
