How do I know when/if something is “unserious”? Perhaps this is not even a good/right question…? Maybe the better question(s) is, “How do I discern how serious something is?” and “How do I conduct myself in accord with that level of seriousness?” (in relation to God, myself, and others)
The simple answer to both questions is humility and submission. These postures/pursuits lead to both wisdom and faithfulness. God has his way and is it always the ‘better’ way. The wise person is humble to admit this, seek this, and do this. The fool will be thoughtless, careless, and reckless. Life is no joke. Everything we do has eternal consequence.
We are all born in folly and are prone to foolishness. But the redeemed of the LORD are able to “see” and “hear”, “know” and “understand”, the things of God. It is not automatic, and there is no neutral ground. Both the fool and the wise come into contact with the ways of the LORD. The fool will stumble in them; the wise will walk in them.
The not-so-simple answer requires me to do the hard work of being wise; to obtain accurate knowledge and appropriately apply it to my circumstances. In humility and submission I must consider, meditate on and dig deep into God’s Word.
I endeavor to live my life this week (and beyond) as one who fears the LORD, accepts the LORD’s ways and aims to walk in them, receives reproof, loves the one who brings it, and genuinely repents to full dependence on God.
Will you do likewise? I need you to help me do this! How can I help you?
