"Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens."
~ Psalm 119:89
In the Bible I am reading as I prepare this reflection, the line break in the first verse of this section records the opening stanza as “Forever, O LORD, your word”. What a comforting phrase to my soul! And easy to remember and recite.
If a life of many and various afflictions, within which we often fear we will perish (v.92), the reality of this truth superabounds. The LORD has given his word, and it is forever, firmly fixed (v.89). By it he has given us life (v.93). In it I can and must delight (v.92), for I am his servant (v.91), belonging to him (v.94).
The LORD has established and maintains all the earth (v.90-91). His faithfulness endures to all generations (v.90). There is no limit to the extent to which his word is necessary and sufficient for my circumstances (v.96).
May we always seek (v.94), never forget (v.93), and increasingly delight (v.92) in the ‘forever word’ of the LORD (v.89). He is trustworthy and true. May your soul, too, be comforted by the simple truth of “Forever, O LORD, your word”.
