"Through your precepts I get understanding..."
~ Psalm 119:104a
I think I can say that in some way or at least at some times, we all wish we were wise and understanding; or at least wiser (v.98) and having more understanding (v.99,100) than those around us at the time. I think it is also safe to say that we all have people in our lives who fit the bill of ‘enemy’ (v.98), teacher (v.99), or aged (v.100). God’s law (v.97)/commandment (v.98)/testimonies (v.99)/precepts (v.100,104)/word (v.101,103)/rules (v.102) provide all the wisdom and understanding anybody could ever need.
In the world, there are many aged, teachers, and enemies who pursue wisdom and understanding from many sources and various means. The believer far surpasses them all when meditation (v.97), contemplation (v.99), and thoughtful retention (v.98); perseverance (v.102), discipline (v.101), and obedience (v.100); delight (v.103), purity (v.104), and love (v.97) of God’s Word are the markers of their life.
Our God is a good God who does good to his people. What an amazing blessing is ours, seen in the 8 verses of this section of Psalm 119! Do not squander the goodness of God. Rightly desire wisdom and understanding. Rightly pursue wisdom and understanding. Rightly utilize wisdom and understanding. Rightly praise the One who IS wisdom and understanding.
