Do I value the Old Testament? I know I would say “yes”, but is it seen practically in my life? As Pastor was talking about preaching through the whole counsel of God, I started thinking about the last year of my devotions…”how much of it was spent in the Old Testament?” It could be arguably said that it was just a season of life, but is it a season or is it a pattern?
Every now and then I enjoy watching apologetics conversations that happen outside of a classroom. Often times, I find videos of men who go out on the streets and talk with random individuals. One such time, a man was talking with a Mormon, and he consistently turned to the Old Testament to refute the Mormon understanding of God. Now, I’m not saying that the reason we study is to win arguments. But I think what was shown in that video, and what will be revealed in the sermon series in Hosea, is that we obtain a better understanding of who our God is and how he wants us to live when we have a steady diet of the Old Testament. That is why I want to intentionally study the Old Testament more, to know him better.
This is something I need to grow in. My “diet” of God’s Word has been made up mostly of the New Testament, sprinkled in with Psalms and Proverbs. I think, though, the reason why this has been the case is because the New Testament is often more easily understandable to me. And so, I am going to try to copy Pastor Danny’s approach.
Just as Pastor has laid out that his preaching plan goes from the Old Testament to the New Testament, and continuously bounces back, I hope to do the same in my personal Bible reading. I am grateful that Pastor is now taking us through a book in the Old Testament, because it gives me a chance to see how one should read and study the prophetic genre. Will you join me in learning how to do so as well?
