The story of Jesus is not over…the work of Jesus is not done…Jesus keeps his promises!
Jesus came to earth over 2000 years ago and then began to “do” and “teach”. Despite his death, resurrection and ascension, he now continues his ministry by the power of the Spirit through the spread of the gospel for the growth of the Church. He intends (commands) us to be confident witnesses of him.
If you have ever been in a courtroom or seen a real court proceeding on TV, you can discern the difference between a confident witness and one who is not. Even someone who we might say is timid, quiet, reserved and uncertain in the regular demeanor of their life can expressly present before a judge and jury a strong, clear, trustworthy confidence if they are a true witness. This is because they are not speaking about themselves but of what another has done that they have seen, known, experienced, et c. Their appeal is external to themselves.
Conversely, someone who we might say is strong, clear, confident and convincing in the regular demeanor of their life can expressly present before a judge and jury as very shaky, unreliable, dubious and untrustworthy if they are not a true witness to things they have seen, known or experienced. They do not have anything objective to rely on and the pressure of such a scenario quickly runs dry the reliance on self. They may desire to convince but have no real substance to appeal to, and this becomes evident to all those in the courtroom.
As believers (no matter how you might describe yourself in the regular demeanor of life) can and must be confident witnesses of Jesus Christ. We are not expressing to others a confidence about ourselves and what we have done or plan to do, but instead what Jesus has done, is doing, and will do. If you have been born again, you have seen, known and experienced objective realities to which you can expressly present to others with strong, clear, trustworthy confidence.
Let’s have confidence and do our part as we journey together through the book of Acts!
