"I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever....My mouth will speak the praise of the LORD, and let all flesh bless his holy name forever and ever."

~ Psalm 145:1-2,21

Forever and ever….can you comprehend it?  Sometimes I think I can, but then I wonder if that is just because I have cheapened the word.  I have cheapened it by saying things like, “(Son), you are taking FOREVER to finish your supper!” or “We have been going through 2 Corinthians FOREVER on Wednesday evenings!”  Or consider many who may have rashly promised “I will be your best friend FOREVER.”, and then find a few short years later, they have completely lost touch with that person.

Forever and ever is a reality.  It is found all throughout God’s Word.  We see it exclaimed 3 times in this psalm (v.1,2,21).  Our God is forever and ever, his rule is forever and ever (v.13), and he has made those who are his saints to be with him forever and ever (v.20).  He has made it that those saints of his will bless and praise his holy name forever and ever (v.1-2).  And he has also provided the place in which we will do so forever and ever.  It is in his kingdom…his everlasting kingdom…his everlasting kingdom of glorious splendor and enduring dominion (v.12-13).

There is much in the eyes of man that we believe will be forever and ever, and perhaps even with well-intentioned belief.   Little does man know, but God knows all.  We ought to say, “If the Lord wills…” (James 4:15).

Do not forget that the LORD is faithful in all his words and kind in all works (v.13,17).  He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love (v.8).  The LORD is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made (v.9).

May you bless and praise the holy name of the LORD as you read Psalm 145.
