"I cry out to God Most High, to God who fulfills his purpose for me."
~ Psalm 57:2
God will fulfill his purpose for me. Do I believe this??
God will fulfill his purpose for you. Do you believe that?
I often want to fulfill my own purposes for me, but today I am (again) reminded that God has a purpose for me and it is he who will fulfill it (v.2). Do I, do you, know what this purpose is? Is it even possible to know? How long must I seek and ask and knock to find out this purpose?
The answer is “YES!”. It is possible to know…and I do know…and you should as well. It does not take a lifetime of seeking and asking to know, it has always been the same answer for everyone for all of history and will be for all of eternity.
That purpose is the exaltation of his glory (v.5,8,11). When I am in the midst of storms of destruction (v.1), oppression (v.3), attack (v.4), pursuit (v.4), threats (v.4), ridicule (v.4) and am heavy laden with all manner of burden (v.6), is the glory of God my primary concern? Is God himself my confidence, comfort, consolation and contentment? Sadly, I must confess he is too often not. When I ask that he “send from heaven and save me” (v.3), do I intend for him to “send out his steadfast love and his faithfulness” (v.3)? Am I desiring that he reorient my heart to thanksgiving and praise (v.7-9)? Again, sadly, far too often not.
Our God is a great and merciful God (v.1). His steadfast love is "great to the heavens" and his "faithfulness to the clouds" (v.10). Our heart’s desire must be the exaltation of his glory "above the heavens" and "over all the earth" (v.11). This is our purpose, designed by our Creator.
“Ask me what great thing I know, what delights and stirs me so, what the high reward I win, whose the name I glory in…Jesus Christ the Crucified!”
Will you help me, and will you help one another, rightly stay fixed on the steadfast love and faithfulness of God to the exaltation of his glory? I need you my brother and my sister! We all need one another to the praise of his glorious name!
