"He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the LORD, 'My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.'"

~ Psalm 91:1-2

 

As Jesus himself has told us, all of Scripture is about him (John 5:39; Luke 24:27).  Psalm 91 is a text where we are able to see this more clearly.  This psalm could rightly be considered one of the Messianic Psalms.  Although the descriptions and promises in this psalm were originally for the author himself, ultimately and fully they are about and for Jesus.  Beyond that, they are also by right for the believer today; for you and I as Christians united to Christ…in whom all of the promises of God are “yes and amen” (2 Cor. 1:20).  We share in his inheritance and have been blessed with all spiritual blessings (Eph. 1:3,11)

You will notice verses 11 & 12 infamously and yet deceivingly used(misapplied) by Satan in the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness (Matt. 4:5-6).  Verses 5 & 6 are not saying we will not experience such things as listed there (terror, assault, pestilence, destruction).  It is not a promise for an easy and carefree life.  Instead, because God is our refuge, fortress, shelter, shield and deliverer we need not fear in the midst of such things listed there.  Nor do we need to concern ourselves with the ultimate outcome of such situations.  They will not overcome or overwhelm us.  They will not have ultimate victory. 

This psalm ends in verses 14-16 with a personal pledge of God…a precious and very great promise of God (2 Peter 1:3-4).  HE will hold me fast, HE will deliver, HE will protect, HE will answer, HE will be with us, HE will rescue, HE will honor, HE will satisfy, HE will save.  This is all in our Messiah Jesus Christ.
