"I hate the double-minded, but I love your law."

~ Psalm 119:113-120

We often hate in others what we hate in ourselves; or we project onto others what we disdain about ourselves.  The Psalmist here begins this section by saying he hates the double-minded.  Perhaps there was an element of recognition that he himself can be a double-minded man and so that is why he projects and/or hates it in others, but I think it is because he has a rightful (godly) hatred of the reality of double-mindedness.  He does so because of his rightful love of the law of the LORD.

He does not accuse the LORD of being double-minded as many often do.  Instead, he requests the LORD to grant him faithfulness according to the LORD’s own faithfulness.  He desires to maintain love and hope and fear and obedience to the Word of God, not wanting to fall/fail and be put to shame.

God’s character and God’s Word are not inconsistent (double-minded).  To know God in his character is to know God in his Word.  To know God in his Word is to know God in character.  To love God, to hope in God, to fear God, to be safe in him can never be apart from his Word.  We must read, regard, abide in, keep and love the Word of God.  If not, we may very well not actually know the LORD but instead have a fictitious relationship with a God of our own imagination.
