"The unfolding of your words give light; it imparts understanding to the simple."
~ Psalm 119:130
I absolutely love the imagery the psalmist portrays in verse 130, “The unfolding of your words…”. I don’t know if this is a universal experience, but there is something special about unfolding a letter or note from a loved one. The anticipation of discovering what is contained and the consideration of the love and care taken to communicate often produces a physiological response…it gives me "the tingles”.
As deep and lovely, significant and important as the message of a letter or note from a fellow human being may be, it can never compare with the depth of truth, the breadth of love, the height of significance and the extent of importance as a message from the gracious Redeemer of my soul. Is the Word of God so wonderful to me (v.129), so longed for that it is as necessary for my existence as water (v.131), so loved that my greatest grief comes from it being rejected (v.136)?
The Word of God can never be exhausted! There is always another fold to open and discover more of the revelation of who our God is, what he has done, what he will do. May we ever be reading, meditating, studying, learning, and keeping it. It will always satisfy, “impart[ing] understanding to the simple (humble)” (v.130). It is our source, motivation, means and goal.
Let us make it our daily prayer to ask of the LORD, “Keep steady my steps according to your promise, and let no iniquity get dominion over me.”
