"I have calmed and quieted my soul,"
~ Psalm 131:2a
This is a power packed little psalm…only 3 verses. But it rightly directs my heart toward humility and a proper perspective (v.1)…encouraging me to know my place in the grand scheme of things. I should not be wise in my own eyes (Proverbs 3:7), but oh how prone I am to brag and puff myself up; or at least think much of myself! I must think rightly of myself (Romans 12:3) and highly of others (Philippians 2:3). I must think most highly of our God. If I measure myself against our holy God (as I should), I would consider myself more modestly. I would not seek to “occupy myself with things too great and too marvelous for me.” (v.1).
This psalm reminds me that I can and should have contentment and peace in not being high and lofty (v.2). I do not mean contentment and peace as a resignation or as in defeat, or wrongly thinking little of myself, but instead contentment and peace as the outflow of my hope and trust and security in God (v.3). I can know that he knows best and whatever station or circumstance or ability or possession I have or don’t have is enough; it is sufficient. He is the one who has been (rightly) lifted up, who is great and marvelous and who is the majesty on high. My identity is found in him.
If have not been putting your hope in the LORD, but in other things (perhaps even yourself), then now is the time…“from this time forth and forevermore.” (v.3).
