"The LORD swore to David a sure oath from which he will not turn back:"

~ Psalm 132:11

As another Song of Ascent, sung by the Jews while on pilgrimage to Jerusalem, his psalm looks to the past and implores the LORD to action today.  Most of the verses of this psalm (v.1-7,11-18) rehearse the past (God’s promises, David’s words, David’s actions, the nation’s response), but the ultimate focus of this psalm is to the future (v.8-10).  Literally, everything centers on these two verses!

In speaking of God’s covenantal promises to Israel and his certain faithfulness to fulfill them, this is a psalm of HOPE.  Hebrews 11:1 reminds us that “…faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

For additional reading, a larger contextual understanding and the ultimate application for this psalm, see 2 Samuel 7 and Luke 1:26-33.  Jesus is the full and final fulfillment of God’s promises!
