"Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain."

~ Psalm 127:1a

 

This psalm, or at least portions of it are likely very familiar.  The last half of the psalm (v.3-5) is often referenced by those who have many children or by those who want many children or by those promoting having many children.  And rightly so.  These verses within this psalm validate the immense blessing of children and therefore affirms the immense stewardship responsibility of parents.  God has commanded that we multiple and fill the earth.  But I fear that some misuse or abuse such verses and cause undue hurt to others.  Take caution.

The first half of the psalm (v.1-2) speaks to the vanity, futility and unfulfillment of a life disconnected from God, his purposes and his ways.  These verses, too, are often used (rightly so) to redirect from a works mentality or efforts in independence.  We are responsible but we are utterly dependent.  We are to build and labor and watch and work and provide but if not in proper submission to and dependence on the LORD, it is meaningless (Ecclesiastes).  These verses too can be misused or abused and could lead us to laziness, apathy or entitlement.  Take caution.

If you are feeling lost, confused, uncertain or disconnected, I would encourage you to prayerfully consider and then humbly and honestly respond to how you are relating to God, to his Word and to his people.  Are you trying to be independent…self-willed, self-ruled, self-motivated, self-sufficient, self-righteous?  If you are, humble yourself, confess this to the LORD and receive his grace of forgiveness.  Then go and do in that very same grace!
