Jesus as God’s Servant, foretold in the book of Isaiah, is identified in Isaiah 49 as “called” and “named” by the LORD God.  We, as those saved through God’s Servant Jesus, are also ‘called’ and ‘named’ by the LORD God.  This Servant is further described as having a “mouth like a sharp sword”.  This sword is his word which is the very Word of God.  The Servant says, “Listen to me…”, meaning, ‘Listen to what the LORD has done for me and has given for me to say’.  As believers in God’s Servant Jesus, we too should be saying to others, “Listen to what the LORD has done for me and what he has given me to say”.  Psalm 126:3 says, “The LORD has done great things for us; we are glad.”

Jesus, God’s Servant, was given the ultimate work of restoration through salvation, for both Jew and Gentile.  This is the good news of the gospel!  The salvation of the LORD God in Jesus is accomplished and available.  In his compassion God has provided comfort through his Son in salvation.  As believers, we are the recipients and beneficiaries.  We have the Word of God; we have the gospel message; when we speak the Word of God we have a mouth like a sharp sword.  He has done great things for us; we are to be telling others; we should be eager to say, “Listen to me.”

The Servant of Isaiah 49 is also the one in whom the LORD God will be glorified.  Jesus has, does, and will glorify God by completing the work given to him.  Amazingly, God has further chosen to be glorified in us…to be glorified by Christ in us!  I challenge myself, and I invite you to join with me and challenge yourself, by asking,

“Does my life give witness (reflect) the salvation I have in Jesus?”

“Is God glorified in me with all of my thoughts, words and actions?”

“Am I glad over the great things God has done for me…even when they are not the great things I would have chosen for him to do?”

If the greatest thing that God has done for me is forgive my sins, why would I not start with likewise forgiving others, and confessing my sins so that others can likewise forgive me?  And then I should “Sing for joy…exult…break forth in singing…” to my great God and Savior!

May the LORD God be glorified in us and may we forever sing of his greatness.
