"The words of the LORD are pure words, like silver refined in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times."

~ Psalm 12:6

My family, and perhaps a few others, are well familiar with me saying that “Words are important.”  They are the most powerful thing that God has given us.  Words can bring life or death (Prov. 18:21).  We revere the Bible because it is God’s Word (1 Thess.2:13; 1 Tim.3:16).  Jesus Christ is The Word become flesh (John 1:1,14).  It is through the Word that both salvation and condemnation come (Romans 1:16, 10:17; Matt.12:36-37, James 1:21).

Psalm 12 is a psalm about words…about the human use of the tongue (v.2-4).  It does not present a pretty picture (v.2-4,8)(James 3:5).  And remember that this ugliness of the tongue is connected to the heart (v.2)(Matt.15:18; James 1:26).

But David also declares the truth (John 17:17) about God’s words…about their purity (v.6), power (v.3,5a) and protection (5b,7).

We are to proclaim and profess faith in our Savior Jesus Christ with our tongues (Romans 10:9).  With our tongue we are to bless our Lord and Father (James 3:9a).  But because our tongue is a restless evil (James 3:8) we are prone to curse our brother (James 3:9b).  “My brothers, these things ought not to be so.” (James 3:10b).

Thank God, that through the washing of the Word (Eph. 5:26) and the Spirit (Titus 3:5) even our words (tongue, lips, mouths) have been redeemed and are being sanctified!  Be careful with your words this day.
