"My heart overflows with a pleasing theme;...my tongue is like the pen of a ready scribe."
~ Pslam 45:1
Psalm 45 is another maskil of the Sons of Korah. If you recall, a maskil psalm is one in which wisdom and insight are gained by contemplation and meditation on the instructive truths presented. There is obvious and ‘surface-level’ benefit to be gained, of course, but take your time to think your way through this psalm and perhaps trace your way through the cross-references listed in your Bible or those that the Spirit may bring to your heart and mind.
This is a psalm that depicts and praises the idealized King. The author of Hebrews, in the first chapter of that book, has rightly identified that this ideal King is fulfilled in none other than Jesus Christ. The one from whom grace pours from his lips and whom God has blessed forever (v.2). He is girded with sword and is mighty in splendor and majesty (v.3). He is victorious for the cause of truth, meekness and righteousness (v.4). All his enemies fall before him (v.5). His throne and kingdom is forever and ever (v.6) He loves righteousness and hates all wickedness (v.7). He has been anointed above all others and his fragrance fills the earth (v.7-8). He is sought with gifts from even the richest of peoples (v.12). He leads with joy and gladness (v.15) His name will be remembered and praised forever and ever by all the nations (v.17)
Oh, may our tongues be like the pen of a ready scribe (v.1); accurately proclaiming the truth of the wonder of the beauty of the righteous love of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
Could we with ink the ocean fill, And were the skies of parchment made; Were every stalk on earth a quill, And every man a scribe by trade; To write the love of God above, Would drain the ocean dry; Nor could the scroll contain the whole, Though stretched from sky to sky!
