"Yet God my King is from of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth."

~ Psalm 74:12

"Life is not all that it appears to be."  You have probably heard or said something to this effect before.  Do you believe it?  Have you considered what this really means?  Do live by the truth alluded to in such a phrase?

This psalm is the 2nd of 11 consecutive psalms written by a man named Asaph.  Similar to Psalm 73, there is a turning point in this psalm, dividing it into halves of stark contrast.  Asaph begins in utter despair and is thoroughly distraught over what he perceives and experiences.  He laments and cries out, questioning God about his “lack of action”.  Asaph is disturbed by the destruction of the temple and the ridicule of the name of the LORD.  He evidences his lack of patience and lack of eternal perspective.

Then in verse 12 we read the word “Yet…”.

Asaph then rightly remembers the truth about who God is, what God has done and what God has covenanted.  In trust and proper humility, he appeals to God to remember and to act accordingly.  Asaph’s perspective expands, acknowledging that God is King…is HIS King…and is THE “King of old”…the King who works salvation.  God as King is mighty and victorious, exercising dominion and sovereignty over everything for all time.

However much concern Asaph thought he and his people had for the name and cause of God, the LORD himself has an infinite amount more concern and awareness of the defense of his cause and his name.  His name will be praised, his cause will prevail, his people will be saved!

No matter how bad your life gets, no matter how disturbing the world around you gets, no matter what you think you perceive or understand, remember God your King…remember his steadfast love and faithfulness…remember his eternal plan and power…patiently trust in him and live accordingly.  As his redeemed, we must be different!
